About DI

What is Destination Imagination (DI)?

VISION

To teach students the creative process and empower them with the skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.

MISSION

To develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity.

Destination Imagination, Inc. (DI) is a leading educational non-profit dedicated to teaching students the skills needed to succeed in school, their careers and beyond. DI is a fun, hands-on system of project-based learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education with social entrepreneurship. Participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

Through these programs, students use the creative process to turn their ideas into reality and learn invaluable skills through the process including:

  • Creative & Critical Thinking
  • Team Building
  • Problem Solving
  • Risk Taking
  • Project Management
  • Budgeting
  • Perseverance
  • Self-Confidence

The Algoma School District participates in the Challenge program.

What is the Challenge Program?

Each year, DI works with educators and industry experts to develop seven, new academic Challenges in the fields of STEAM, social entrepreneurship, and early learning (Rising Stars!). Students work in teams to research, design and build a solution to their preferred Challenge. Organized by age and grade, teams are made up of 2-to-7 members and operate under the guidance of an adult Team Manager.

In solving a Challenge, they learn the creative process—a powerful learning tool that helps students assess problems, reflect on their progress, learn from failure and turn their original ideas into reality. Students who participate in the Challenge Program have the opportunity to present their solutions at a local tournament.

Team members own the solutions to their Challenges. This means that non-team member Interference is not allowed.  This includes Team Managers and parents.   Everything from idea generation, script writing, material decisions, building, painting and even where to stand and how loud to speak are decisions that the team members themselves will make.

The Algoma School District is part of the BayLake Region and our local tournament will take place on March 4, 2017 at the Sturgeon Bay High School.  If a team qualifies at the Regional level, they are invited to participate in the Wisconsin Affiliate tournament (aka State) that takes place on April 8, 2017 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. If a team qualifies at the state level, they are invited to participate in Global Finals, the culminating international tournament that celebrates student creativity.  This tournament takes place at the end of May in Knoxville Tennessee.
